5 Stars The most practical book I’ve read on the subject
Mental skills training has been a subject of interest of mine for several years now, and I’ve read many books on the subject, and even consulted on one that was being written (which will be published soon). I have a great deal of theoretical knowledge of the subject, but what I lacked was some practical tools to put that knowledge into practice. Basham’s book provided me with a number of those tools.
This book is short (it can be read in a few hours), and is very light on theory, but heavy in practical tips (which is the opposite of many of the other books I’ve read). I would consider it a necessary tool in the tool belt of anyone who is serious about seeking peak performance.
I received this book on a Wednesday, read it on Thursday, and had a major volleyball tournament that Saturday. By putting some of the specific tools into practice during that tournament, I had the best performance of my life, and finished third (my previous best finish in a similar-level tournament was 9th). Since that time, I am able to notice a significant difference between my performance when I am using the tools and when I am not.
One last thing: Basham’s experience is in the sport of competitive shooting, which relies heavily on closed motor skills (like shooting free throws or pitching a baseball), as opposed to open skills (like catching a fly ball or blocking a spike). The tools and examples in the book are focused mostly on closed skills, so it can be a challenge to the reader to figure out how to apply them to their sport. In my opinion, this does not detract significantly from the value of the book, but I would have liked to see some additional emphasis on those other areas.
5 Stars Excellent advice for molding your mind to be positive
Written by an Olympic champion. Full of examples of how to notice and change your mentality to be positive and confident. Easy and enjoyable to read. I wish I would have read this when I was younger.
5 Stars Awesome Book
I’ve read a lot of “self-help” books and find that most have a lot of filler. Let’s face it, if you’re buying a self-help book you want to get to the answer and get an explanation of the answer quickly. Next you want a few real-life examples. This book does just that. It tells you exactly how to use the system, gives you detailed steps, and then gives you real-life examples. AND it’s the shortest self-help book I’ve read. No filler, just straight to the meat of the book.
Also, I’ve read a lot of books that have bits and pieces of getting you to your goals. This book seems to pull all of those pieces together. I think a lot of the goal oriented books only touch on one of the three areas that are addressed in this book. After reading a lot of the books I’ve read I can see how each of these other books come together with this book.
However, this is the first “Mental Management” or athletic-mental connection book I’ve read. Some of the other books I’m referring to are more business related or spiritual related or goal related. So maybe all athlete-mental connection books are like this, but the other one I bought is much longer (I haven’t read it yet).
FYI…Some of the other books I am pulling from: “A New Earth”-Ekhart Tolle….”The Secret”-Rhonda Byrne….and a few business books on goal setting that I can’t think of right now.
5 Stars For any Target Sport athlete.
Great book, easy to read and follow, motivational and positive. Lanny uses real life experience to flower the teachings he has to offer to great success. As a champion shooter his experience is a great addition to the mental management system that he has come up with, and indeed is what gives it its validity. I would recommend this to anyone involved in a Target Sport, shooting, archery, etc.
5 Stars Excellent
Hidden gem among the many books bout leadership. A must for anybody looking to reach a goal.
