Emerging animal research and studies of abused and neglected children suggest individuals with particular genotypes are at greater risk for depression, anxiety disorders, and problems with the abuse of alcohol and other substances. These gene-by-environment interactions are so powerful that some might assume that these genotypes identify people who are predestined to negative life outcomes. The Ventura County affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness will host a 5K NAMIWalks for the Mind of America at 10:30 a.m. Sat., May 2 at the Ventura Beach Promenade in Ventura. The event will benefit NAMI Ventura County which provides help to those dealing with mental health disorders and their families.
